The East Coast Classics
The East Coast Area of The Old Gaffers Association stretches from the north bank of the Thames, up to the Wash, although our principal areas of activity are on the Essex and Suffolk Coasts. We also have strong links with the Netherlands, particularly with the VKSJ, the Dutch Classic Yacht Association and the Netherlands OGA.
Our sailing events are open to all gaff, lug, square and gunter rigged vessels (no age limit) and classic bermudan yachts traditionally designed before 1960. We also welcome traditionally built vintage powered vessels, such as MFV's. Vessels which have taken part in our events (which have been running since before 1963) include local Smacks, Winkle Brigs and Bawleys, ex-working craft from other areas, and a whole range of traditional yachts, from lugsail dinghies to Six Metre racing yachts..
We run social and sailing events throughout the season, at various locations on the East Coast, the “original” East Coast Old Gaffers Race at Brightlingsea. Swallows and Amazons weekend for open boats at Walton on the Naze in July, really good, then in the school holidays at the end of August the August Classic Cruise, now incorporating the old East Coast Classic events, a mixture of racing and cruising, but above all having fun messing about in boats which we all like. These, and other events, mean that we lay on over 30 days of rallies and races! These are open to non members as well, but we hope you will join the other members on the East Coast, because you have enjoyed yourself so much.
You don't have to have an old boat to join the OGA, as long as you are interested. Membership of the OGA is only £27 p.a. (2009) For this you get membership of a strong international association with all sorts of benefits. A quarterly journal, superbly presented, packed with photographs, event round-ups, cruising accounts, technical information, members adverts etc. To supplement this there are area newsletters, likeour Eastcoaster. The OGA also acts as a lobby group to look after our interests in termsof European and National legislation.
