For sale - The Kate
A very distinctive vessel with an interesting history and an impressive turn
of speed. Designed by Alwyn Brown of Maldon, the son of Dr Brown the famous
transatlantic sailor. Built by Mr Whitmore of Heybridge basin, Essex. She
was formally called Miranda (sail No PC 5) and was built in 1936 as one of
five and she is now the last one remaining she is currently rigged as
Bermuden sloop with tan main, large and small stay sail and White genoa
(reacher).
I acquired the vessel in 1999. She was pasted on to me in order to restore
her back to sailing condition so that she could once again compete in
Blackwater estuary regattas. The restoration mainly focused on the hull. She
is constructed of five 12"x3/4" full length pitch pine boards and two full
length boards' 8"x 5/8. Construction is interesting in that the topsides are
lap jointed. The frames are positioned at 1' 6" centers. The boards were
re-fastened to the frames with non-ferrous screws and the gaps between the
boards were splined with pitch pine. Below the water line she's been covered
with a GRP cover and then painted.
She was re-launched at West Mersea June 2000 and participated in many of the
local regattas. In 2000 I commissioned a new road trailer from West Mersea
Trailers which then enabled me to travel with her to Brest, Douarnenez
France2000, Douarnenez 2002, Crinniu Galway Bay festival Kinvara Ireland
2003, Gulfe de Morbihan France 2003. She has since been in France and kept
dry under cover in a barn retuning home to Essex this October. She is now
kept under cover in Arlesford, Essex where she can be viewed.
In the Maldon Town Regatta in 2002 she won the Ind Coope Old Gaffers Cup
First on corrected time in a race for Gaffers and Classic Bermudan's
They sail very well, even against the Flying Dutchman class according to
Haddon Spurgen the owner of PC3 who raced in Maldon before the war.
They get a mention in John Leather's book the Salty Shore where they were
then taken up by Tollesbury Sailing club. "This little fleet of unorthodox
craft appeared on the Blackwater regattas and raced in handicap events,
displaying amazing speed under a variety of rigs, the handicap boats were
refreshingly and inspiring in ingenuity of design"
A fantastic opportunity to own the last of a unique, distinctive class with
excellent performance. She offers her new owners an opportunity to race and
day sail in classic events around the East coast or as I have done, load her
on the trailer and set off on new adventures to other shores.

ONLY SO MANY TIDES
Wonder why we do it?
Wonder how we do it?
Wonder what we do it in?
Wonder how long we do it for?
Wonder why it's fun?
Why not have a read of "Only So Many Tides"?
It's a life time adventure in which the author and his boat faced many trials and tribulations together. Capturing many of the best qualities of traditional sail, the story unfolds against a changing setting that stretches from Liverpool Docks (and North Wales) to Felixstowe and a across the North Sea- with the forging of links to Holland through classic boat events.
It illustrates how much traditional boats of modest cost and aspiration can give great enjoyment cruising, racing and fishing, confounding opinions of today's plastic navy pundits.
There are views on rigging, repairs and maintenance, with illustrations in many cases.
But perhaps the greatest illustration is that you do not have to be rich, gung-ho and healthy for a life of pleasure on a little old boat. It's two fingers to the establishment, whatever that might be, and don't "Let the Bastards grind you down!"
Copies available from Margaret Wainwright, Portview, New Road, Mistley, Essex CO11 2AE, £9.95 +£1.00 p&p.
£1.00 per book goes to East Coast Funds
