Essex Smack Valkyrie CK47 is for sale!
110 years old and wanting to come home!!. Currently making her way up from Spain to northern France then later to UK. We are too old for her now and she needs younger blood. We have had her for 34 years and can give full history and detailed works done and needed. We have been let down by time-wasters and dreamers and just want to see her back on England’s coast again. Spain has been too hard for her. Full details available from me at ck47@telefonica.net or on temporary phone at 00 33 299 971 909
She is 40 foot, bowsprit 22 ft. asking £15,000
A Brief Description on Valks Condition by the Owner.
The deck is Iroko laid onto mahogany beams, the deck in general is sound and shows no signs of movement. There are though some signs of the Sikaflex caulking parting from the deck seams this obviously will let in water in to the cabin area. There are three holes in the after deck which once housed deck fillers to the water and fuel tanks which have now been removed, these holes need graving pieces inserted to make that area water tight, also on the starboard aft of the cabin there is a deck plank butt which has lifted away from the beam, this could be cut back to the next beams forward and aft and a new piece fitted. On the port side forward of the cabin the fairlead for the foresail sheet is missing off the deck. To do the work/repairs on the deck which I would include repaying the whole deck and cleaning it up would take a man 5 to 6 days.
The cabin top on the starboard side along the edge the ply is beginning to delaminate this can be cut back say one foot and a seam baton fitted under the ply and a new section fitted. The two small hatches on the coach roof need to have new ply fitted as the edges are chipped away and show signs of ware. These can be easily replaced. The engine hatch cover also needs replacing. To do this work I would think max of three days including painting.
The bulwarks and posts were renewed in 2003 these at the moment just need cleaning up where warps and fenders have chafed the edges and repainted. The arch board across the stern is a little worse for wear this could be renewed. To clean up and sand back the bulwarks, renew the arch board and paint I think 3 to 4 days work.
Engine beds, engine, stern gland in a good condition, the cutlass bearing is worn but serviceable needs to be changed say in the next year or so. The engine is the equivalent to the Perkins 4108, 45 to50 hp with a mechanical gearbox , this is operated manually as the morse cable is broken.
Under the after deck there are 2 to 3 half frames which will need changing, and a good paint out is needed. I would say this work would take about 4 days.
The main bulkhead which divides the engine from the cabin is sound.
Main cabin, this is a bit of a tip. There are 2 rough bunks p and s with a work shelf for a small stove to p. The beamshelfs port and starboard have been replaced in 2003 also quite a number of half frames, there are still some which will need to be changed or doubled up on.
On the port side carling at the aft end where it is dovetailed into the beam there is signs of wet rot, this can be cut out and a section scarfed in and to replace the strength at the beam fit a iron bracket to the beam and carling. The forward half bulkhead on the port side needs replacing. The whole of the inside needs cleaning up and painting. I think to do all the necessary work inside the cabin would take about 6 days plus the paintings say 2 to 3 days.
The hull planking where necessary in 2003 was renewed approx 180ft run, the keel was renewed at this time from the stern post to the forefoot, this was also made deeper by 25cm to give her more strength and a better windward performance. Also a new rudder was made at this time. The mast, boom, and gaff are made of spruce and the bowsprit is of Douglas fir.
The running rigging is in a serviceable condition also the standing rigging. There are two mainsails 450sq tone large light reaching jib 200sq ft,one foresail 120 sq ft, one jib 200sq ft, another jib at 120sq ft and one topsail 120sq ft.
I feel that all in all if you take into account a total of 26 working days to bring her up to scratch you have a smack well worth the money.

ONLY SO MANY TIDES
Wonder why we do it?
Wonder how we do it?
Wonder what we do it in?
Wonder how long we do it for?
Wonder why it's fun?
Why not have a read of "Only So Many Tides"?
It's a life time adventure in which the author and his boat faced many trials and tribulations together. Capturing many of the best qualities of traditional sail, the story unfolds against a changing setting that stretches from Liverpool Docks (and North Wales) to Felixstowe and a across the North Sea- with the forging of links to Holland through classic boat events.
It illustrates how much traditional boats of modest cost and aspiration can give great enjoyment cruising, racing and fishing, confounding opinions of today's plastic navy pundits.
There are views on rigging, repairs and maintenance, with illustrations in many cases.
But perhaps the greatest illustration is that you do not have to be rich, gung-ho and healthy for a life of pleasure on a little old boat. It's two fingers to the establishment, whatever that might be, and don't "Let the Bastards grind you down!"
