UNFINISHED RESTORATION PROJECT
(Click on any picture to enlarge)
COCKLE is a 22’ Dauntless. She was afloat and in sailing condition when a new owner decided to have her lifted out on Iron Wharf in Faversham for a major refit. A shed was built over her, and the work of rebuilding began. Much had been achieved when the owner, due to personal problems, had to abandon the project. All work has been done at a high standard.
The boatyard needs to recover costs; the work can be continued there (with new agreement with the yard management) or the boat must be taken away.

Stem - new
Starboard: cabin side new - forward garboard + one plank up - scarphed in
Port: cabin side repaired forward
All hood ends – renewed Some frames renewed – all to be done
26 ribs steamed and in place – clenching in progress
The beam shelves - new bits scarphed in
Cabin front – new Deck beams – new Corner posts inside – new
2 carlins (both sides) – new All deck beams – new ends scarphed in

She was originally fitted with a Stuart Turner petrol engine which was removed to be replaced with a diesel (not included). The old shaft and propeller are still there.

She was gaff rigged (gunter) and the spars – mast, gaff and boom – are stored under the roof of the shed.

ONLY SO MANY TIDES
Wonder why we do it?
Wonder how we do it?
Wonder what we do it in?
Wonder how long we do it for?
Wonder why it's fun?

Why not have a read of "Only So Many Tides"?

It's a life time adventure in which the author and his boat faced many trials and tribulations together. Capturing many of the best qualities of traditional sail, the story unfolds against a changing setting that stretches from Liverpool Docks (and North Wales) to Felixstowe and a across the North Sea- with the forging of links to Holland through classic boat events.

It illustrates how much traditional boats of modest cost and aspiration can give great enjoyment cruising, racing and fishing, confounding opinions of today's plastic navy pundits.

There are views on rigging, repairs and maintenance, with illustrations in many cases.

But perhaps the greatest illustration is that you do not have to be rich, gung-ho and healthy for a life of pleasure on a little old boat. It's two fingers to the establishment, whatever that might be, and don't "Let the Bastards grind you down!"
